Alina DeBellis

I'm Alina! The first story I ever wrote was at ten years old called Al-Jill, the Alien. It was about a young girl who discovers her best friend is an alien and has to help keep it a secret.

I loved stories that were weird then, and love when they have a bit of weird now.

My early career centered around theater and television, where I worked on shows like Community, founded my own indie production company, directed plays off-Broadway at Manhattan Rep and in Los Angeles, hosted a podcast, and helped produce Under the Radar Festival for The Public Theater. Regardless of what path I ventured down, I remained dedicated to bringing imaginations to life. Eventually, I found my way to writing again as a graduate of Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults. As a prior reader for top literary agencies like Tobias Literary and Aevitas Creative, I have learned that great storytelling is part craft, part magic, and part willingness to dive headfirst into the unknown.

When I'm not consumed by a great story, you'll find me hiking through the PNW mountains, practicing yoga, or attempting to walk my two cats on leashes through the neighborhood.

Fun fact: I once packed up my life into storage to backpack solo through Europe for four months because, well, it would make a good story one day.

Hello(10)_edited.jpg

If you're drawn to stories that take risks, embrace the weird, or find magic in unexpected places, we might be a perfect match.

I enjoy working across all ages: chapter books, middle grade, young adult, new adult, and adult fiction. While I work on most everything, I am drawn to stories that blend genres, play with form, or explore the quiet (or wild) transformation of healing.

A few genres I connect with are:

  • Speculative fiction

  • Science fiction

  • Fantasy

  • Romance & Romantasy

  • Surrealism

  • Magical Thinking (Magical Realism)

  • Contemporary

  • Narratives exploring trauma, mental health, and human struggles.

As an editor, I’m deeply invested in craft. One of my favorite things to do is work on scene-level editing—breaking a scene down beat by beat to understand its purpose and what it brings to the story. It’s not just about fixing what's not working, it's about unlocking what could be.

Some of my favorite elements of craft to work on are:

  • Character development and emotional arcs

  • Tone and atmosphere

  • World-building

  • Conflict

  • Structure

  • Voice

My background in theater, television, film, and writing means I bring a layered understanding of storytelling. I find so much joy in discovering what makes your story yours—and helping you make it even bolder, brighter, and more you.

Whether you’re writing something wildly experimental, delightfully weird, or tastefully traditional, I’d love to hear from you!
